How did it all start?
With children, of course, and a challenge that Maja couldn’t solve except through innovation. Together with her husband Anže, co-founder of Snugi, they were looking for comfortable, washable and, above all, breathable footwear for their son Žan, who was struggling with a fungal infection after wearing slippers for hours on end in kindergarten. There was no solution on the market that did all this and came close to barefoot walking. Maja joked that she was going to sew the slippers herself, and the next day she was already on the phone looking for a sewing course.
From the first stitches to the first slippers
With the help of her sewing course tutor, Maja created her first pair of children’s slippers. Beside her regular job, late in the evening, when her son was asleep, she would browse for suitable materials and then, armed with different types of fabric, she would set to work. Žan was so taken with the slippers that he even wanted to sleep in them, so she sewed pair after pair, and pretty soon Snugi was spotted by a chain of shops, thus launching their first mini family business.

Design process
It all starts with the design of the sole. Most of our footwear is designed to mimic barefoot walking. By using the best materials, we ensure flexibility, breathability, lightness and flexibility. We adjust the cut for each age range, whether it’s crawling babies or toddlers just starting to walk. We are constantly striving to improve and develop our products to delight our huge community.

DISCOVERY
We are trying to understand what we can do better to ensure that children have appropriate footwear to accompany and protect them on their journey.

RESEARCH
Once we understand their needs, we go on to explore materials that are breathable, flexible, durable and washable. We also work with experts in the research process.

PROTOTYPING
Based on our research, we develop a few prototypes in different shapes, widths and materials and test them until we find which ones would be most suitable for the majority of children, as well as for adults.

TESTING
In the final testing phase, the prototypes are offered to a selected group of children as well as to parents. When we see how they react to a new product, it tells us if we’re heading in the right direction. They then test the footwear for some time in order to give us feedback on which cut and which materials suit them best.

DESIGN
We design shoes that both children and adults love to wear, because they are comfortable, ensure healthy foot development and stand out from the crowd.
Materials used
Part of producing the best footwear is sourcing the best materials. Snugi footwear is committed to extremely high quality standards. The materials used must be durable, adapt to the movement of the feet, breathable and washable. We source carefully selected materials from the European Union, which are certified to the highest standards.
COLOURFUL FABRIC
A very durable fabric that provides perfect breathability and comfort. It is certified to Oeko-Tex Standard 100. Extremely easy to maintain. It is machine washable.
MICROFIBRE
Extremely soft and durable fabric that is machine washable.
WOOL FELT
Wool is one of the most effective natural insulators.
This means that it regulates body temperature. When it's cold, it keeps you warm; when it's warm, its breathability means you don't overheat.
Wool or wool felt footwear is infinitely more effective and much healthier than leather in combating sweating and fungus. When sweating is excessive, leather is not absorbent and breathable enough, so sweat stays on the skin or socks, creating an ideal breeding ground for fungi and bacteria. Because wool absorbs moisture quickly and prevents the body from overheating, fungi no longer have the conditions to thrive in.
MERINO WOOL
Merino wool is super fine, durable and provides a level of breathability like no other wool. One of the most amazing properties of merino wool is its ability to regulate temperature, keeping your feet cool in summer and warm in winter.
COTTON
Cotton is of plant origin and is processed using the seed fibres of the cotton plant, which are spun into thin threads and then refined through various mercerising and glazing processes. Cotton is very pleasant to wear, absorbent, cooling in summer and very breathable, skin-friendly and non-scratchy.
