Development of a child’s foot
At birth, a baby’s feet are soft and so cute that you would love to hold them in the palm of your hand forever. But as parents, we know very well that in the following months and years they will grow and go through incredible changes. During this period, babies need footwear that protects them from the cold or possible injuries, but since the bones in their feet are still soft cartilage and their feet are developing, the footwear must be soft and wide enough not to constrict their tiny toes and feet.
Smooth development can only happen if the feet are as free as possible. Children’s footwear should therefore imitate walking barefoot as much as possible.
Over the years, children will go through five stages of development as they learn to crawl, walk, run, dance and play. Most changes happen in the first six years. When fully developed, a child’s feet will have 26 bones, 33 joints and more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments.
Every child is individual and develops at different speeds.
How long it takes them to start walking, or how early their feet start to form, can vary greatly from child to child. It is important not to worry about this, as your child will soon be walking, running and jumping.
How to choose the right footwear?
The best footwear for a child is the one that allows him to walk in them as if he were barefoot. Therefore, it is important to choose soft footwear with a non-slip sole and an instep that is not too high. Flexible and roomy footwear that does not restrict movement enables proper growth of bones, muscles and ligaments. Also pay attention to the sealing of the shoe in the ankles, which can be caused by a too high and too hard instep, which affects the improper load on the hips. Narrowing of the leg can cause chronic inflammation of the joints on the leg, pain and deformities in later life.
