At birth, a baby’s feet are soft and so adorable that you would want to hold them in your palms forever. But as parents, we know that in the coming months and years, they will grow and undergo incredible changes. During this period, babies need footwear that protects them from the cold or possible injuries, but since the bones in their feet are still soft cartilages and their feet are developing, the footwear must be soft and wide enough not to constrict their tiny toes and feet.
Unhindered development can only occur if the feet are as free as possible. Therefore, children’s footwear should mimic barefoot walking as much as possible.
Over the years, children will go through five stages of development as they learn to crawl, walk, run, dance, and play. Most changes occur in the first six years. When fully developed, children’s feet will have 26 bones, 33 joints, and more than 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
Every child is individual and develops at different rates.
How long it takes for them to start walking or how early their feet begin to form can vary greatly from child to child. It is important not to worry about this, as your child will soon be walking, running, and jumping.
The best footwear for a child is one that allows them to walk as if they were barefoot. Therefore, it is important to choose soft footwear with a non-slip sole and a not too high back support. Flexible and spacious footwear that does not restrict movement allows for proper growth of bones, muscles, and ligaments. Be mindful of the sealing of the shoe at the ankles, which can be caused by a back support that is too high and too stiff, affecting improper load on the hips. Constriction of the foot can cause chronic joint inflammation in the leg, pain, and deformations in later life.
